How Can Benzoyl Peroxide Treat Acne?

We have all gone through the painful moment of spotting a pimple in the mirror and feeling horrified. This problem continues to worsen as you age, so you start the search for the proper treatment in the form of creams, cleansers, etc. Benzoyl peroxide is one active ingredient that is extremely useful in treating acne.

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

To put it in a nutshell, it is an organic peroxide that acts as a nonspecific oxidizing agent. The chemical compound helps in treating acne via oxidizing activity. It is quite similar to hydrogen peroxide in structural composition – both peroxides are medications that release oxygen on the skin to eradicate bacteria. In addition to destroying bacteria, benzoyl peroxide is also an anti-inflammatory and comedolytic, which means that it heals inflamed skin and opens up pores at the same time.

How does it work?

Benzoyl peroxide is immensely effective and reliable when it comes to treating acne, as it works using several different mechanisms at once. It is both antimicrobial, killing bacteria and other organisms, and an exfoliant, helping to unclog pores and gently slough off dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It is a potent acne-fighting ingredient. It's ability to squash acne-causing bacteria in it's tracks is especially important because it means that, in some cases, it can be used to tame acne in place of antibiotics. Using benzoyl peroxide, either in place of or in combination with antibiotics, helps to mitigate the issue of resistance
(happens when antibiotics are used for too long).

What are the types of acne it can treat?

Benzoyl peroxide can be used on all types of acne, but it is especially useful for red, inflamed bumps. It is also great at clearing blackheads and whiteheads, along with pustules, which are small red bumps with white tips. In some cases, it can help with cystic acne – the most painful type.

What is the ideal way to use benzoyl peroxide?

The percentage of the ingredient in over-the-counter products ranges from 2.5% to 10%, but this isn’t the deciding factor when it comes to effectiveness. With over 15 years experience we have learned that benzoyl peroxide works best when used with a unique strategy we tech in our online acne coaching program.
